President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has charged members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State to intensify efforts and avoid complacency ahead of the July 12, 2025 local government elections.
Delivering the president’s message, Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, urged party faithful to see the upcoming council polls as critical to consolidating the APC’s dominance in the state, warning that the party must not take the election for granted.
Speaking at a stakeholders’ parley tagged “Stakeholders’ Meeting with Mr. Governor” held at the State House, Marina, Sanwo-Olu emphasized the importance of party unity and voter mobilization.
The gathering had in attendance chairmanship and councillorship candidates, key party leaders, and grassroots mobilizers from across the state.
The governor conveyed Tinubu’s call for reconciliation, particularly among aspirants who lost out during the APC primary elections. He urged them to bury personal grievances and work in unity for the overall success of the party.
“This is not the time for division or rancour. We must close ranks and work collectively for victory. The local government administration is closest to the people. Let the people feel your presence and impact,” Sanwo-Olu stated.
He also cautioned candidates not to betray the confidence reposed in them by party stakeholders, insisting that a four-year tenure is sufficient for any council chairman to make a significant difference.
“This is a joint ticket for chairman and vice-chairman. I expect synergy and mutual respect. You have been given an opportunity to serve—use it well,” he added.
The governor stressed that the APC-led local governments must prioritize economic development and sustainability to bring governance closer to the grassroots.
In his remarks, the chairman of the Governance Advisory Council (GAC) in Lagos, Prince Tajudeen Olusi, defended President Tinubu over recent accusations by former Jigawa State Governor Sule Lamido, who alleged that Tinubu supported the annulment of the historic June 12, 1993 presidential election.
Olusi described the claims as “a desperate attempt to rewrite history,” affirming that Tinubu had always stood on the side of democracy and justice.
Also speaking, the Lagos State APC Chairman, Pastor Cornelius Ojelabi, urged all candidates to align their campaign plans and eventual administrative policies with the development blueprint of both the state and federal governments to ensure seamless democratic dividends to the people.
