Residents of Maiduguri were thrown into panic on Monday evening after a suspected double bomb explosion struck the popular Monday Market and the gate of the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital shortly after the Muslim breaking of fast.
The explosions reportedly occurred around 7:20 p.m., moments after iftar, sending residents and traders fleeing the affected areas.
The spokesperson for the Borno State Police Command, Nahum Kenneth Daso, confirmed the incident in a statement posted on his X handle on Monday.
According to him, security operatives and emergency responders were immediately deployed to the affected locations following reports of the explosions.
He said, “Following reports of a suspected explosion at Maiduguri Monday Market and UMTH gate at about 7:20 p.m., joint security operatives and emergency responders have been deployed.
“The Police Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit, Base 13 Maiduguri, is currently on the ground conducting necessary assessments.”
Daso urged residents to remain calm and avoid the affected areas while security agencies carry out investigations and safety checks.
“Residents are advised to remain calm and avoid the area while assessments continue. Further updates will follow shortly,” he added.
As of the time of filing this report, authorities had yet to confirm the number of casualties or the extent of damage caused by the explosions.
Security has been heightened around major public facilities in the city as operatives intensify surveillance and response operations.
