The Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Dutsinma, CSP Bello Gusau, is under investigation for allegedly sleeping with a 15-year-old girl who was detained at the police station.
The teenager was reportedly taken to the DPO’s residence, where she spent the night, sparking outrage and calls for justice.
The incident came to light following an investigation by the International Human Right Today Initiative (HRTI), a non-governmental organization advocating for human rights.
The organization’s leader, Comrade Maiyasin, disclosed that the group had gathered substantial evidence indicating that the girl was not held at the station as required but was instead taken to the DPO’s house.
According to HRTI, the girl had initially been reported missing before being found and brought to the Dutsinma Police Station. Due to the late hour, her relatives were informed that she would spend the night at the station.
However, the DPO reportedly directed the relatives to leave her, assuring them he would personally ensure her safety and take her home the next morning.
The situation took a turn when the girl’s relatives returned to the station the following morning to provide her with food, only to discover she was not there.
Officers on the morning shift reportedly informed them that the teenager had not spent the night at the station.
A confrontation ensued between the relatives and the police until the girl was eventually brought back, wearing different clothes from those she had the previous night.
HRTI claims that the teenager later confirmed she spent the night at the DPO’s residence on his instructions.
The organization also obtained an audio recording in which the girl’s father vowed to seek justice for his daughter
The Katsina State Commissioner of Police, CP Aliyu Musa, has since suspended CSP Gusau from duty and constituted an investigative panel to probe the allegations.
The Katsina State Police Command spokesperson, DSP Abubakar Sadiq Aliyu, confirmed receipt of the complaint and assured the public that a thorough investigation is underway.
“The command has received the complaint, and we are investigating the matter to ensure justice is served,” DSP Aliyu stated.
Human rights advocates and members of the public have condemned the alleged misconduct, calling for strict disciplinary action against the DPO if found guilty.
Comrade Maiyasin stressed that HRTI’s investigation was meticulous, adding that they had submitted all necessary evidence to the Katsina State Police Headquarters.
“This is a serious breach of trust and abuse of power. We expect the police authorities to act decisively to uphold justice and accountability,” Maiyasin said.
The case has sparked widespread debate on the treatment of vulnerable individuals in police custody and the need for stricter oversight of law enforcement officers.
The outcome of the investigation is eagerly awaited as the Katsina State Police Command continues its inquiry.
