Drama As Yeni Kuti, PDP’s Segun Sowunmi Trade Words On Live TV Over Visit To Tinubu

There was a heated exchange on live television on Tuesday as veteran broadcaster Yeni Kuti and PDP stalwart Segun Sowunmi clashed over his controversial visit to President Bola Tinubu.

Sowunmi, a former spokesman to PDP presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar in the 2023 elections and a known critic of Tinubu’s administration, had stirred reactions online after images of his weekend visit to the President’s Lagos residence surfaced.

Appearing on TVC’s Your View, the PDP chieftain found himself in the hot seat when Kuti, one of the show’s co-hosts, confronted him about the visit, questioning his political allegiance.

“You’ve had a lot of criticism for the President; now your tone seems to have changed. So, when is your move? When are you leaving the PDP to join the APC?” Kuti asked, pointedly.

Visibly irked, Sowunmi fired back, “Although I cannot see who is asking those questions, I didn’t come on your programme so you can try to be cheeky with me. Stop that.”

Kuti, 64, didn’t back down. “I can’t be cheeky with you because I’m sure I’m older than you,” she retorted.

Realising the tension, Sowunmi made a conciliatory remark. “Oh sister o! My Aunty! I take that back. Please don’t be angry.”

But Kuti swiftly clapped back, “I’m not your aunty.”

The fiery exchange has since gone viral, with Nigerians divided over Sowunmi’s visit and the perceived shift in his political stance. While some accused him of political double-speak, others defended his right to engage across party lines.

Sowunmi has yet to make an official statement clarifying the purpose of his visit to the President, but insiders suggest it may not be unconnected to ongoing political realignments ahead of 2027.
