There was confusion at an Area Court in Ilorin, Kwara State capital, on Thursday, when a middle-aged woman, identified as Mrs. Mulikat Yusuf, slumped shortly after her husband, Mr. Ishaq Abdulganiyu, insisted on ending their marriage.
The incident, which caused a temporary disruption in court proceedings, occurred moments after Abdulganiyu told the presiding judge, Mr. Toyin Aluko, that he was no longer interested in the union.
The visibly emotional wife, who had earlier pleaded with the court to reject her husband’s request for dissolution, reportedly lost consciousness as she walked out of the courtroom.
“I have nowhere else to go after giving birth to six children for him,” Yusuf had told the court in a trembling voice before she collapsed.
Court officials and sympathizers quickly rushed to her aid and revived her after pouring water on her. Proceedings were briefly suspended to restore order in the courtroom.
While addressing both parties after the incident, Judge Aluko advised the couple to explore every possible avenue to reconcile their differences before the next sitting.
He said, “Marriage is a sacred institution. You both need to make sincere efforts to resolve your misunderstanding in the interest of your children.”
The judge subsequently adjourned the case till December 10 for a report of settlement or continuation of hearing.
The marriage between Yusuf and Abdulganiyu, sources said, had lasted several years and produced six children before recent disagreements led to the current crisis.
