A yet-to-be-identified driver of a Mercedes-Benz C-300 has fled after allegedly crushing a woman to death along the NYSC Bus Stop inward Igando area of Lagos State.
The tragic incident occurred on Saturday morning as the victim was reportedly on her way to a service at the Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministries, Igando.
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority said the driver abandoned the vehicle and escaped immediately after the accident.
The General Manager of LASTMA, Mr Olalekan Bakare-Oki, who confirmed the development in a statement on Saturday, described the driver’s action as a grave violation of both legal and moral responsibilities expected of motorists involved in road crashes.
According to him, preliminary reports indicated that the deceased was walking within the designated pedestrian corridor when the vehicle, under circumstances yet to be determined, veered off course and rammed into her.
He said, “Upon receipt of distress calls, our personnel stationed along the Igando axis swiftly mobilised to the scene.
The area was cordoned off to avert secondary accidents, while traffic flow was professionally managed to prevent gridlock and ensure public safety.”
Bakare-Oki added that the accidented vehicle was secured and evacuated from the roadway in collaboration with officers of the Nigeria Police Force, Igando Division.
The coordinated response, he noted, helped restore normal vehicular movement in the area within a short period.
In what witnesses described as a heartbreaking twist, news of the fatal crash filtered into the church during service, where the victim’s husband was said to be worshipping.
Overwhelmed by grief, the husband and some congregants reportedly rushed to the scene, where the remains of the deceased were later conveyed for necessary rites.
The police have commenced an investigation to unravel the circumstances surrounding the crash and track down the fleeing driver.
Bakare-Oki stressed that the outcome of the ongoing investigation would determine further government action, warning that traffic violations, particularly those endangering pedestrians, would not be tolerated.
He urged motorists across the state to exercise caution, comply strictly with speed limits and accord due respect to pedestrian rights.
“The preservation of human life remains paramount. We will continue to enforce traffic regulations decisively to safeguard all road users,” he said.
