DSS, Military Kill 45 Bandits In Niger Ambush

The Department of State Services and the Nigerian military have killed no fewer than 45 bandits in a covert operation around Kuchi town in Munya Local Government Area of Niger State.

Security sources said  that the operation, which took place in the early hours of Monday, June 2, followed actionable intelligence gathered by the DSS on the movement of suspected bandits loyal to notorious kingpin, Dogo Gide.

According to the sources, over 100 bandits armed with sophisticated weapons had mobilised from Bilbis forest in Maru LGA of Zamfara State and parts of Kaduna State, and were advancing towards Kuchi town when they were ambushed by security operatives.

The sources said, “Operatives launched a surprise attack and waylaid the bandits in the outskirts of Kuchi town.

“A fierce gun battle ensued, leaving 45 bandits dead while several others sustained injuries. Motorcycles and arms were also recovered from the scene.”

The operation reportedly thwarted a planned large-scale attack on communities in the area orchestrated by Gide and his loyalists.

Five DSS operatives were said to have sustained serious injuries and are currently receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital.

“This ambush, which is part of sustained offensives, follows the earlier decimation of over 50 bandits and has dealt another blow to Dogo Gide’s network,” one of the sources added.

Residents of the affected communities have expressed relief following the successful operation, describing it as a significant step towards reclaiming peace in the troubled area.

Banditry has continued to plague communities in the North despite ongoing efforts by security agencies to curb the menace.

In response to the growing insecurity, the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, earlier this week relocated to Benue State to oversee military operations in the region.
