Security forces comprising operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) and the military have engaged the terrorists wrecking havoc in Shiroro area of Niger State in gun battle.

It was learnt that the operation, which began on Tuesday when the terrorists stormed Chibani village in Munya Local Government Area of the state, lasted more than 15 hours.

Sources within security agencies confided in Daily Trust on Thursday that the joint forces teamed up to dislodge the criminals after they perpetrated their criminality in the community.

The terrorists reportedly killed one Ayuba Isah and left two other persons, one policeman and one Alhaji Shuaibu, with gunshot wounds – the development that angered security operatives to hunt them.

Daily Trust reports that some places in Niger State, particularly Shiroro axis have been the hotbed of terrorists’ activities with many villagers fleeing their respective communities in the area.

Credible sources also disclosed that on Wednesday, bandits said to be numbering over 200, brandishing sophisticated weapons, stormed a security base in Kuchi, a town in Munya Local Government Area.

“Immediately, the security agents got intelligence, they swung into action. The fierce gun battle that ensued led to the neutralising of scores of the bandits, with many others fleeing with various degrees of injuries,” the source said.

He revealed that many of the terrorists who were killed during the gun duel are believed to be loyal to the popular terrorists’ kingpins, Dogo Gide and Leyi.

A highly-placed security source also confided in our correspondent that he saw large herds of cattle, believed to have been rustled, crossing the Kusasu River in Galadima Kogo District, Shiroro LGA.

According to him, they were advancing towards a place believed to be their hideout in Borisudna/Kwaki axis in the same Shiroro.

He said DSS operatives and soldiers of the Nigerian Army in the area had contacted the Nigerian Air Force for aerial support, and expressed optimism that the Air Force would be able to smoke out the remaining fleeing bandits.

Both the DSS and the military high command are yet to make an official reaction regarding the development as of the time of filing this report last night.
