Some local government chairmen in Edo State resumed their official duties on Monday, following an order from an Edo State High Court, despite resistance from suspected thugs in certain councils who attempted to block their return.
The situation appears tense, as reports suggest that some officials within the state government have been plotting to remove the chairmen, although the exact method of execution remains unclear.
In Akoko-Edo Local Government Area, Chairman Tajudeen Alade resumed office, where he attended to official matters and addressed workers.
He emphasized the importance of preserving local government autonomy for the development of the people.
Alade appealed to Governor Monday Okpebholo to act as a father figure for all, stressing that the three tiers of government must collaborate for the benefit of the people, with development being the ultimate priority.
He remarked, “Despite the challenges, we’ve been able to manage our resources effectively to ensure good governance for the people of Akoko-Edo. Local government autonomy is crucial for our people’s freedom and economic prosperity. With autonomy, we can improve infrastructure like roads, health centers, and agricultural support for our farmers.”
Meanwhile, in Orhionmwon Local Government Area, the situation remained calm, with Chairman Newman Ugiagbe reportedly in good standing with the councilors.
According to the Press Secretary, Roy Osariemien, the councilors were united and working alongside the chairman.
However, in Etsako East, the chairman, Princess Benedicta Atoh, did not resume office for a second consecutive day due to a volatile atmosphere created by suspected thugs at the council secretariat in Agenebode.
According to the Press Secretary, Ben Atu, the entrance to the secretariat was barricaded by thugs, and it was only the intervention of the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) that protected the chairman’s office from potential damage.
Atoh has stated that she does not wish for any violence and has called for the law to take its course.
