In a surprising turn of events, the Edo State Government has made the decision to disband the media crew associated with Deputy Governor Phillip Shaibu.
This decision comes in the aftermath of their abrupt exit from the colloquium commemorating the 60th anniversary of the Midwest Referendum, held on Monday, August 28, 2023.
The Deputy Governor has been directed to formally request media coverage for his office’s activities from the Edo State Ministry of Communication and Orientation moving forward.
This decision was communicated through an official statement by Chris Osa Nehikhare, the Edo State Commissioner for Communication and Orientation, on Monday.
Nehikhare expressed that the media crew had disregarded the established accreditation protocol by attempting to enter the event venue, where Governor Godwin Obaseki and other distinguished guests were already present.
“The orchestrated and stage-managed walkout and disruption is highly regrettable,” Nehikhare remarked.
The Star reported that Phillip Shaibu had walked out of the event, alleging that his aides were barred from entering.
A viral video depicted the Deputy Governor gaining entry to the venue while his aides, including security personnel, were denied access.
Despite his attempt to secure permission for his team’s entry, a security operative stood firm in preventing their access.
Visibly displeased by the incident, Shaibu ultimately led his team out of the venue and left. Interestingly, this occurrence came on the heels of a separate incident the day before, where Shaibu was prevented from accessing Governor Obaseki during a church service commemorating the 32nd anniversary of Edo State’s creation on Sunday, August 27.
Governor Obaseki later clarified that the actions of the security operatives were rooted in their duty to ensure his safety.
The situation has raised eyebrows and fueled discussions about the dynamics within the state’s political landscape.
