In a significant crackdown on drug-related crimes, the Edo State chapter of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has reported the successful apprehension of 252 suspected drug dealers and traffickers over the span of nine months.
The Edo State Commander of NDLEA, Mr. Buba Wakawa, disclosed this information through Assistant Commander Narcotic Ondoimi Bebetu, who heads the Media and Advocacy division in Benin.
These arrests occurred between January and September of the current year. Notably, individuals apprehended for suspected drug use were offered counseling and subsequently reunited with their families, a practice permitted by the law.
To combat drug trafficking, the NDLEA collaborated with various law enforcement agencies, including the Police, the Army, the Department of State Security (DSS), and other relevant organizations.
They conducted periodic operations in hotels and event centers throughout the state, resulting in the capture of numerous drug dealers and traffickers.
Wakawa commented, “From January until now, NDLEA has apprehended 252 suspected drug traffickers and peddlers in the state. Some have been incarcerated, some are currently facing legal proceedings, and others have received counseling.”
He went on to explain that the agency frequently visited hotels and recreational centers known for drug-related activities. Upon apprehension, suspects were questioned to identify others involved in drug dealing, peddling, and usage.
Despite significant challenges in the fight against drug abuse in Edo State, the NDLEA remains committed to reducing drug usage and disrupting drug supply chains in the region.
The commonly trafficked drugs in the area include cannabis, tramadol, cocaine, heroin, Colorado, and codeine syrup, which are used in various forms, such as sniffing, cooking, chewing, smoking, and swallowing tramadol.
