Edwin Clark Urges Tinubu to Intervene Using Doctrine Of Necessity In Ondo Crisis

South-South leader Edwin Clark has penned an open letter to President Bola Tinubu, urging him to apply the doctrine of necessity, as proposed by General Yakubu Gowon’s Eminent Persons Committee, to address the ongoing crisis in Ondo State.

Governor Rotimi Akeredolu’s prolonged absence from the state and strained relations with Deputy Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa have sparked political drama, financial concerns, and protests in the state.

Akeredolu’s return from medical leave in Germany in September hasn’t seen him publicly address the people, leading to various repercussions.

The crisis has triggered attempts to remove the deputy governor, sealing of the PDP’s secretariat, allegations of financial misconduct, and criticism from socio-political groups. President Tinubu has intervened, urging parties to reconcile.

In his letter titled “urgent need to resolve the Ondo state impasse,” Clark draws parallels with the Yar’Adua era’s constitutional crisis and suggests the adoption of the Doctrine of Necessity.

He appreciates Tinubu’s involvement but highlights the confusion arising from the Speaker’s directive for the deputy governor’s unwritten resignation.

Clark implores Tinubu to act decisively under the doctrine of necessity, emphasizing the state’s divided state and the urgency of resolving the crisis amid existing national security challenges.
