The suspects were apprehended on Friday, March 21, 2025, as part of the agency’s ongoing crackdown on naira abuse.
Upon their arrest, the EFCC recovered a total of N5.4 million, with Folake found in possession of N3.85 million, while N1.6 million was seized from Modupe.
The anti-graft agency disclosed this in a statement on Monday by its Head of Media and Publicity, Dele Oyewale, who confirmed that the suspects would face prosecution after investigations.
“The suspects, Adeoti Folake and Adewuyi Modupe, were apprehended in Lagos on Friday, March 21, 2025, while allegedly hawking naira notes.
Upon their arrest, the sum of N3,850,000 and N1,600,000 were recovered from them respectively. The suspects will be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations,” the statement read.
The EFCC has intensified its efforts against naira abuse in recent weeks, arresting multiple individuals for allegedly spraying or mishandling the nation’s currency.
On March 17, the commission arrested Kelly Okungbowa, the suspended coordinator of the Edo State Public Safety Response Team, popularly known as Ebo Stone, following a viral video that showed him spraying and mutilating naira notes at a bar.
Similarly, TikTok influencer Murja Kunya was apprehended in Kano for allegedly spraying naira notes during a hotel stay at Tahir Guest Palace.
The EFCC has reiterated its commitment to enforcing the Central Bank of Nigeria Act, which prohibits the abuse of the naira, warning that violators will face legal consequences.
