Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Ola Olukoyede has threatened that he will resign from his position if the embattled former Governor of Kogi State, Yahaya Bello, escapes prosecution.
The EFCC is pursuing Bello on 19 counts related to alleged money laundering, breach of trust, and misappropriation of funds totaling N80.2 billion.
Olukoyede while addressing editors, at the commission’s Headquarters in Abuja,affirmed his commitment to see the case through to its conclusion, vowing to ensure that all who impeded Bello’s arrest face justice.
He said “no matter the obstacles or attacks against us,we will not waver in our mission to cleanse the nation of corruption.”
He emphasised the importance of Nigerian support for the EFCC’s endeavours, stressing that the agency’s success is intertwined with the nation’s prosperity.
He highlighted the positive impact of the EFCC’s efforts on stabilizing the value of the naira and enhancing the foreign exchange market.
The EFCC’s determination was further underscored as it served a copy of the charge sheet to Bello and his lawyer, Abdulwahab Mohamed, following the former governor’s absence in court.
Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court in Abuja invoked sections 384(4) and (5) of the Administrative and Criminal Justice Act 2015, ordering Bello’s counsel to receive the charge sheet.
This action came after Bello failed to appear for his arraignment, prompting the court to resort to substituted means of service.
Justice Nwite said Bello’s non-compliance with court proceedings, signalling the gravity of the allegations against him.
