The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has detained Joy Enwa, the Accountant-General of Delta State, over allegations of a N1.3 trillion fraud tied to Ifeanyi Okowa, the former governor of the state.
Dele Oyewale, the spokesperson for the EFCC, confirmed the development on Thursday, stating that Enwa was taken in for questioning as part of an ongoing investigation into the alleged mismanagement of state funds during Okowa’s administration.
“Mrs. Enwa was detained for questioning over the ongoing investigation into the mismanagement of state funds under the former (Okowa) administration.
“Some other government officials have also been interrogated,” Oyewale said, adding that Enwa was released after her interrogation.
The anti-graft agency has also reportedly grilled other key officials, including a former Director of Finance and Administration and a senior Government House official.
This development comes weeks after EFCC operatives arrested former Governor Okowa on November 4 over allegations of diverting N1.3 trillion, funds that reportedly included portions of the 13 percent derivation allocation intended for oil-producing states.
Okowa is also accused of using public funds to acquire properties in Abuja and Asaba, the Delta State capital.
In response to the allegations, Okowa has denied any wrongdoing, labeling the investigation and his arrest as “politically motivated.”
The EFCC has intensified its probe into the matter as part of its commitment to addressing corruption in the management of state resources.
