The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has elucidated the hurdles it faces in prosecuting old cases of naira abuse, attributing it to the establishment date of its Special Task Force against Naira Abuse and Dollarization of the Economy on February 7, 2024.
In a statement issued on Sunday night by EFCC’s Head of Media & Publicity, Dele Oyewale, the commission clarified its position in the wake of the recent sentencing of controversial figure Idris Okuneye, famously known as Bobrisky, for Naira mutilation.
Bobrisky, who received a six-month prison sentence on Friday, April 12, 2024, for the mutilation of naira notes, has drawn attention to the issue of currency abuse.
Oyewale emphasized the inundation of the commission with videos showcasing naira abuse, pledging a focus on investigating and prosecuting new cases of such infractions. He stressed, “Increasingly, members of the public are drawing the attention of the Commission to video recordings of abuse of the Naira by Nigerians from all walks of life.”
However, Oyewale cautioned against circulating old videos of naira abuse, indicating the commission’s jurisdiction is restricted to cases occurring after the establishment of its specialized task force.
Expressing gratitude for public engagement in combatting naira abuse, Oyewale assured that the EFCC remains resolute in probing and prosecuting individuals involved in such acts. He also disclosed ongoing investigations into several celebrities implicated in naira abuse.
“Many of them have made useful statements to the Commission, and many more have been invited by investigators working on the matter,” Oyewale stated. He concluded by reaffirming the EFCC’s unwavering commitment to upholding the law without favoritism and cautioned the public against violating laws concerning currency abuse.
