The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has handed over a bank draft of ₦100 million recovered from defaulting mining companies in Akwa Ibom State to the Federal Ministry of Solid Minerals Development.
The presentation, held at the EFCC’s Uyo Zonal Command on Friday, was made by the Zonal Director, Assistant Commander of the EFCC (ACE I) Oshodi Johnson, on behalf of the Commission’s Chairman, Ola Olukoyede.
According to the EFCC, the funds were recovered from mining firms that had failed to remit statutory royalties to the Federal Government.
While handing over the draft to Mr. Emmanuel Effiong Bassey, the Federal Mines Officer in charge of Akwa Ibom State, Oshodi stressed that the Commission remains committed to ensuring transparency and accountability in asset recovery.
> “This ₦100 million is just a tip of the iceberg,” Oshodi declared. “We are still investigating and will make bigger recoveries in this sector and beyond. The EFCC will not relent until every kobo belonging to the government is recovered.”
He called for stronger collaboration between the EFCC and relevant ministries, especially in information sharing, to enable more effective recovery efforts.
Receiving the draft, Bassey praised the EFCC’s swift action, noting that the recovery followed a petition lodged by the ministry.
He described the solid minerals sector as “critical to Nigeria’s economic stability” and urged sustained cooperation between both institutions.
“Without this sector, the country struggles,” Bassey said. “This partnership is vital, and we believe more recoveries will follow.”
The EFCC noted that actionable intelligence from the ministry played a key role in the operation, adding that it would continue to deploy intelligence-driven strategies to track and reclaim public funds.
