The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has announced the recovery of over N248 billion in corruption proceeds over the last one year.
The anti-graft agency disclosed that it reclaimed £53,000 and €172,000, reinforcing its commitment to combating financial crimes.
Wilson Uwajaren, the EFCC’s Director of Public Affairs, revealed these figures on Thursday while providing updates on the agency’s recent activities.
He also noted that €5,000 was recovered specifically for victims of crimes in Spain.
In the effort to curb cybercrime, the EFCC has secured more than 35 convictions related to the abuse of the Naira at social events, Uwajaren highlighted, emphasizing the agency’s stance against currency misuse.
He said the commission is also set to expand its reach with the establishment of three new directorates in Ekiti, Katsina, and Anambra states. This expansion aims to bolster the EFCC’s capacity to combat financial crimes more effectively nationwide.
Uwajaren said that in a separate incident in September, the EFCC returned $180,300 and 53 vehicles, assets fraudulently taken from Canadian citizens, to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.
EFCC Chairman Ola Olukoyede, during the handover ceremony, stressed the importance of international cooperation in tackling financial crimes and highlighted that Canada’s assets recovery marked a significant milestone in the commission’s anti-cybercrime efforts.
“Nigeria must not be seen as a hub of financial and other crimes,” Olukoyede declared, reaffirming the EFCC’s commitment to transparency and accountability.
He pledged that the agency would intensify efforts to investigate, prosecute, and recover stolen assets for victims of financial crimes, underscoring the need for a collaborative approach in addressing global crime.
