The Egba Economic Summit Group has appealed to the Minister of Works to urgently complete the long-delayed Idi-Aba–OGTV–Ajebo–Obafemi–Alapako Express Road, warning that the slow pace of work is hurting economic growth, public safety and access to critical institutions in Ogun State.
In a letter dated January 16, 2026, signed by its President, Dr Gbenga Adeoye, the group said the road — designed to link Abeokuta to the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway — has remained largely stagnant since it was awarded during the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari.
The group copied the letter to traditional rulers in Egbaland, including the Alake and Paramount Ruler, Oba Adedotun Aremu Gbadebo; the Osile of Oke-Ona, Oba Adedapo Tejuoso; and the Olowu of Owu Kingdom, Prof Saka Matemilola.
Former Ogun State Governor Olusegun Osoba and the Babalaje of Egbaland, Chief Olusegun Osunkeye, were also copied.
While commending the Federal Government for ongoing infrastructure projects, including the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway and repairs on the Sango-Abeokuta Road, the group said the Abeokuta–Ajebo corridor has become a major source of concern.
Adeoye warned that excavation works and abandoned sections have turned what was once a smooth alternative route into a nightmare for motorists, increasing travel time and accident risks.
He said, “From the Federal Medical Centre through OGTV to Obafemi and Ajebo, the road has deteriorated badly.
While the section within Abeokuta city looks fairly good, driving becomes extremely difficult shortly after, especially around rural communities where standards appear to have dropped.”
The group expressed worry over the impact on the newly established Federal University of Medicine and Medical Sciences, Ajibayo, which has its permanent site on the road corridor but cannot relocate due to the poor condition of access routes.
According to the group, the road is also critical to decongesting the Ogere axis of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, as it provides an alternative route for motorists travelling between Abeokuta and Ibadan without passing through the Abeokuta-Sagamu Interchange.
Adeoye added that the corridor, if completed, could transform Ajebo, Obafemi and surrounding communities into an industrial and commercial hub, while improving access to Ogun State Television (OGTV) and other public facilities.
The group urged the ministry to ensure that construction standards are not compromised after leaving Abeokuta city, noting that rural sections of federal roads often suffer reduced quality, leading to faster deterioration.
“We plead that urgent action be taken to ensure speedy completion of this road. Its impact will be felt not only in Egbaland but across Ogun State and the wider national economy,” the letter stated.
