Tension gripped Zamfara State on Wednesday as a worshiper tragically lost their life, reportedly mistaken for a target by a security operative in pursuit of hoodlums.

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) operative allegedly fired the fatal shot during Eid prayers in Gusau, the state capital, leading to a swift and furious reaction from outraged locals.

In a surge of collective grief and anger, residents vented their dismay by setting an NSCDC vehicle ablaze, escalating tensions in the area.

Confirming the incident, the Zamfara State Police spokesperson, ASP Yazid Abubakar, stated that two NSCDC personnel involved had been apprehended, emphasizing the ongoing investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

However, NSCDC spokesperson Ikor Oche countered the allegations, asserting that the personnel were stationed at their post near the prayer ground when they heard the gunshot. According to Oche, the officers rushed to the scene and found a woman injured, prompting a mob attack that forced them to flee for safety, leaving their vehicle behind. Oche stated categorically that the NSCDC personnel did not shoot or kill anyone.

The tragic event underscores the fragility of security situations during religious gatherings and the urgent need for thorough investigations to prevent such incidents in the future.
