The Ogun State Police Command on Friday confirmed the arrest of eight individuals allegedly involved in unlawful assembly, obstruction of traffic, and assaults on police officers at Sango-Ota.
The suspects, identified as members of a group operating under the name Democratic Republic of the Yoruba, were apprehended following reports of road barricades, bonfires, and public disruption at Temidire Junction and the Sango-Ota under-bridge.
Speaking in a statement, the command’s spokesperson, Oluseyi Babaseyi, said, “Upon receiving the report, police operatives were immediately mobilised to the affected locations, where they successfully dispersed the group and restored normalcy.”
The arrested individuals were named as Adewale Sosanya, Opeyemi Oladotun, Zara Gabriel, Ajoke Gabriel, Adewale Adebomojo, Yusuf Tanimowo, Olurotimi Ademola, and Toyin Gabriel.
Items recovered from them included a Toyota Dyna vehicle, two public address speakers, a carton of flags and shirts with inscriptions linked to the agitation, and banners displaying a manifesto.
Babaseyi added that investigations were ongoing and that the suspects would be charged to court upon completion of the probe.
The Ogun State Commissioner of Police, Lanre Ogunlowo, reassured residents of the command’s commitment to protecting lives and property.
He warned that any acts capable of breaching public peace, including assaults on police officers, would attract decisive action.
Ogunlowo urged citizens to remain law-abiding and to report suspicious activities promptly through the command’s emergency lines.
This latest arrest comes amid growing activities by groups advocating for Yoruba self-determination, raising concerns over public safety and the need for law enforcement vigilance across the state.
