Former Kaduna State Governor, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, on Monday accused President Bola Tinubu of allegedly withdrawing N100bn monthly from the Federation Account without constitutional approval, describing the action as an impeachable offence.
El-Rufai made the allegation during an interview on Prime Time, a programme on Arise Television, where he claimed that the deductions had been ongoing for over 15 months, amounting to about N1.5tn.
According to him, neither the National Assembly nor state Houses of Assembly authorised the withdrawals, despite the fact that part of the funds belonged to states and local governments.
He said, “This is government data. I’m not quoting figures out of the air. Every month, N100bn goes out of the Federation Account without appropriation by the National Assembly, and without appropriation by state assemblies.
That makes the entire deduction and expenditure unconstitutional. It is an impeachable offence.”
The former governor questioned the utilisation of the funds, insisting that there was no visible improvement in security despite the huge sums allegedly withdrawn.
“So, where has that N1.5tn gone? What is it being used for? Why is the security situation worsening? Why is the Federal Government asking communities to defend themselves?” he asked.
El-Rufai also lamented the state of the nation, saying the current realities were far worse than what many Nigerians anticipated during the 2023 election campaigns.
“If you had told me in 2022 or 2023 that things would get this bad, I would have said you were mentally ill,” he added.
As of the time of filing this report, the Presidency had yet to respond to the allegations.
