Former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai has launched a scathing critique against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), declaring that he no longer recognizes the party he helped ascend to power.
Speaking at a national conference in Abuja focused on bolstering Nigerian democracy, El-Rufai lambasted the APC for veering away from its foundational principles and failing to uphold democratic practices.
The former governor criticized the party’s leadership, accusing it of neglecting internal democratic processes and allowing the absence of crucial party meetings, including the National Executive Committee (NEC) and caucus sessions for over two years.
El-Rufai expressed grave concern over the erosion of governance standards and the quality of leadership within political parties.
He emphasized the need for stringent criteria in candidate selection, arguing that mere possession of a secondary school certificate should not suffice for political nominations.
“The APC has abandoned its core objectives of combating corruption, revitalizing the economy, and enhancing security,” El-Rufai asserted, lamenting the party’s deviation from its original goals.
In a stark warning, he highlighted survey results indicating a potential 75% voter abstention rate in the upcoming 2027 elections, underscoring the urgency of addressing governance deficiencies.
Responding to El-Rufai’s criticism, Daniel Bwala, Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Public Communications and Media, challenged the former governor’s stance, questioning whether his sentiments would have been the same if he were still in a government position.
“My senior brother, if you were part of the government and cabinet, would you maintain the same position? History is replete with examples. It is a government you participated in forming that you now seek to dismantle. Haba Mallam,” Bwala remarked.
