Former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has dragged the state police command before the Police Service Commission (PSC), accusing its leadership of engaging in unlawful and unconstitutional practices.
In a petition dated September 8, 2025, and addressed to the PSC chairman, El-Rufai alleged that the Commissioner of Police in Kaduna State and some senior officers under his command had exhibited “egregious conduct” capable of undermining public trust in the police.
“I am writing as a citizen of Nigeria and former governor of Kaduna State to formally lodge this complaint and demand an immediate, impartial, and exhaustive investigation into the unlawful and unconstitutional conduct of the Commissioner of Police and some officers of the Kaduna State Police Command,” El-Rufai stated.
The former governor said his petition was not personal but an attempt to strengthen police accountability and support the commission in enforcing discipline within the force.
“The egregious conduct of some bad eggs that serve interests other than those conferred by law in Section 4 of the Police Act, 2020, negatively affects the image of the police and undermines public confidence in its leadership,” he added.
El-Rufai’s petition comes amid escalating political tension between him and the current Kaduna State government.
On September 4, the Kaduna police command invited the former governor and six leaders of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) for questioning over allegations of criminal conspiracy, incitement, disturbance of public peace, mischief, and causing grievous harm (read here).
The police had ordered El-Rufai to appear at their headquarters on Monday, September 8.
Earlier, on September 1, the Kaduna State Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Suleiman Shuaibu, accused El-Rufai of plotting to destabilise the state through “provocation and manipulation” (see report).
But El-Rufai fired back, accusing the state government of orchestrating the August 30 attack on ADC members during a meeting in Kaduna. He insisted he would present evidence before the police to prove his case.
The latest petition deepens the standoff between El-Rufai and his successor’s administration, raising concerns about political instability in Kaduna, a state already burdened by insecurity and communal tensions.
Analysts say the case will test the impartiality of the police and the ability of the PSC to exercise its constitutional mandate of promoting discipline and ethical standards within the force.
