President Muhammadu Buhari has said that seeking election into public offices in Nigeria is no longer business as usual
.
He made allusion to the failure of 10 sitting governors to secure senatorial sit in their state.
Buhari spoke while hosting the newly-installed Emir of Dutse, Alhaji Muhammad Sunusi in Abuja.
According to Buhari’s media aide, Garba Shehu, the President noted that the failure of 10 sitting governors to get elected into the Senate shows that there is no longer a guaranteed route to power.
Buhari praised Nigerians for their political understanding expressed during the 2023 elections.
He said the results proves the growing strength of Nigeria’s democracy.
“Assumption is always that you are a governor for eight years and you go to the Senate to crown the career. No one should underrate the Nigerian voters anymore. Politics will be more difficult, henceforth.
“It (the election) is a testament to the maturity of our democracy and to the amazing sophistication of the voter,” Shehu quoted Buhari.
During the visit, Buhari promised to do his best for Jigawa state in his remaining time in office after the emir listed projects executed in the area by the Buhari administration and requested more.
The president told the emir and his entourage that he and the nation would continue to miss his friend, the late Emir, Alhaji Nuhu Sunusi.
Earlier, the Emir, Sunusi thanked the Buhari administration for helping Jigawa to excel in rice production and for approving a rail link to Dutse from Kano.
The traditional ruler also lauded the president for the restoration of peace to the state, the entire country and to neighbouring countries that had been threatened by insecurity.
