…Pushes For Wildlife Safety Plan In Ijebu East

A member of the Ogun State House of Assembly, Hon. Waliu Ifedolapo Owode, has expressed grief over the tragic death of 49-year-old Musa Yahaya Kalamu, who was reportedly killed by a stray elephant in the Itasin area of Ijebu East Local Government Area.

The lawmaker, who represents the Ijebu East Constituency, described the incident as shocking and deeply unfortunate.

He extended his condolences to the bereaved family and urged residents of the affected community to remain calm despite the tragic circumstances.

“This is a deeply painful and confusing time for our community, but I urge everyone to stay calm while we engage with the necessary government agencies to take swift and meaningful action,” he said in a statement on Monday.

Hon. Ifedolapo called on the Ogun State Government and relevant environmental and wildlife agencies to launch an immediate investigation into the incident and to establish preventive measures that will ensure such tragedies are not repeated.

He further advocated for the implementation of a conservation-focused development plan aimed at managing the boundaries between wildlife habitats and human settlements.

“This tragedy underscores the urgent need for a coordinated approach involving conservation bodies, state authorities, and local communities. We must ensure safety without compromising our ecological responsibilities,” he added.

The legislator pledged to raise the matter on the floor of the House of Assembly, noting that the protection of lives and property remains paramount and must not be compromised by the encroachment of wildlife into residential areas.

“This issue will not be ignored. I will work with all stakeholders to pursue a lasting solution. Our communities should not have to live in fear,” he assured.

The incident has sparked growing concern among residents, especially in border communities near forest reserves, where human-wildlife conflict is becoming increasingly common.
