A dispatch rider, Monday Osazuwa, has alleged before a Lagos High Court sitting in Ikeja that former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Godwin Emefiele, directed him not to maintain any records of substantial funds collected on Emefiele’s behalf.
Osazuwa, the first prosecution witness in Emefiele’s ongoing trial, made the statement on Monday as he took the witness stand again following an application granted by Justice Rahman Oshodi for his recall.
Emefiele is facing charges of abuse of office and money laundering involving $4.5 billion and N2.8 billion, an amount alleged to have been embezzled during his tenure at the CBN.
The former apex bank governor, known for his influential role in Nigeria’s financial sector, has denied all allegations, maintaining that he is innocent.
During cross-examination by Emefiele’s counsel, Olalekan Ojo (SAN), Osazuwa testified that he had occasional direct communication with Emefiele, during which the ex-governor instructed him explicitly to avoid documenting any funds he collected or delivered.
Osazuwa also admitted to having no documents from either Emefiele or his co-defendant, Henry Omoile, that would serve as proof of these transactions.
He further noted that he handed over funds to Emefiele without any witnesses present.
Adding to the complexity of the case, the fifth prosecution witness, Mrs. Ifeoma Ogbonnaya, a business relationship manager at Zenith Bank Plc, concluded her testimony on Monday, clarifying that her communications with Mrs. Margaret Emefiele involved three corporate accounts.
However, Ogbonnaya confirmed that there were no records linking Emefiele or Omoile to these transactions, according to the bank’s documentation.
