The Emir of Kano, Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi II, has called on Nigerian leaders to introduce a daily allowance of ₦200 for every pregnant woman in the country as part of efforts to fight malnutrition and improve maternal health.
Speaking at the 2025 Nutritious Food Fair in Kano, organised by Propcom, the emir said poverty and malnutrition remain major threats to women and children, warning that the situation, if unchecked, could cause irreversible damage to newborns.
Represented by the District Head of Shanono, Dr. Mahmoud Yashi, Sanusi said:
“If every pregnant woman gets as little as ₦200 daily, it could go a long way in addressing malnutrition in our communities. We have nutritious foods around us—milk, groundnuts, beans, beni seed, and vegetable oil—that can help fight malnutrition if properly utilised.”
He urged policymakers and traditional rulers to place women’s health at the centre of public policy and social welfare initiatives, adding that addressing hunger among expectant mothers was key to reducing infant mortality and stunted growth.
The emir commended Propcom for its work in promoting food security and supporting rural women, describing such initiatives as crucial to building healthier communities.
Also speaking, the Country Representative and Political Director of UK-Aid-funded Propcom Project, Dr. Adiya Ode, reaffirmed the organisation’s commitment to breaking the cycle of hunger and malnutrition among poor Nigerians.
According to her, Propcom is focused on strengthening agricultural productivity and improving livelihoods, particularly in conflict-prone and climate-affected regions.
“We are supporting Nigeria’s reform initiatives by investing in sustainable food systems that empower women and vulnerable farmers,” she said.
On his part, the Country Manager of HarvestPlus, Dr. Yusuf Dollah Fuad, noted that Kano has the resources to defeat malnutrition if local food production and consumption are effectively harnessed.
“The National Food Consumption and Micronutrient Survey shows that most people in rural areas consume what they produce. This is an opportunity to promote nutritious, locally available foods,” he said.
