The Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, has called for peace and unity among residents of Kano State, warning that anyone attempting to incite chaos in the ancient city will face dire consequences.
The monarch’s remarks came on the heels of the Court of Appeal’s judgment in his favor concerning the longstanding emirate tussle.
Speaking shortly after the judgment, which reinstated him as the 16th Emir of Kano, Sanusi expressed gratitude for the peaceful atmosphere that has prevailed in the state despite the prolonged legal battle.
“Let it be known that whoever seeks to ignite chaos in Kano will be consumed by that fire. This is a battle for justice, and it belongs to God, who needs no assistance from anyone,” Sanusi said.
He urged residents to continue upholding peace and unity, adding, “We must pray for divine guidance and protection for Kano State.”
The Court of Appeal on Friday overturned an earlier decision by the Federal High Court, which had ruled against the Kano State Government’s actions regarding chieftaincy reforms.
The appellate court declared that the Federal High Court lacked jurisdiction over matters related to emirate councils.
Meanwhile, the Kano State Government has applauded the appellate court’s ruling, describing it as a victory for justice, fairness, and the rule of law.
In a joint press conference held at the NUJ Press Centre, Kano, the state’s Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Haruna Dederi, alongside Commissioners for Local Government and Information, Mohammed Tajo Othman and Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, emphasized the importance of complying with the court’s decision.
“The judgment reaffirms the government’s commitment to due process in reforming traditional institutions while preserving Kano’s cultural heritage,” Dederi stated.
He added that the ruling validates the government’s actions in appointing and restructuring chieftaincy roles in the state.
According to Dederi, all previous orders and pronouncements by the Federal High Court regarding the emirate dispute have been nullified, and the law enacted by the Kano State House of Assembly concerning emirate councils has been upheld.
The state government called on all public and private entities to respect the judgment and work collaboratively to ensure lasting peace and development across Kano’s emirates.
“Let us prioritize the collective good of Kano State above individual interests. We must focus on unity, progress, and inclusive governance,” Dederi said.
