In a dramatic turn of events, a middle-aged man, Idris Adamu, on Monday voluntarily surrendered himself to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission over his alleged involvement in a ₦9 million job scam.
The suspect, who reportedly arrived alone at the EFCC’s Gombe Zonal Command around 1pm, requested an audience with the Acting Zonal Director, DCE Sa’ad Hanafi Sa’ad, to confess to his alleged crimes.
According to a statement by EFCC spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, issued in Abuja, Adamu admitted to defrauding several unsuspecting job-seekers by falsely promising them employment in federal government agencies.
“I came to repent of my sins and to confess to the EFCC,” he was quoted as saying. “In the past, I have obtained the aggregate sum of ₦9 million through my bank account from different individuals in the guise of offering them employment opportunities in Federal Government agencies, which was false. I have changed, but I am afraid of the EFCC.”
His unexpected admission reportedly caused a stir among operatives, who were caught off-guard by the suspect’s unsolicited confession.
He was immediately taken into custody for interrogation and further investigation.
The EFCC said preliminary findings suggest Adamu may have impersonated government officials to lure desperate job-seekers, exploiting the country’s rising unemployment crisis.
While commending the suspect’s decision to come forward, the EFCC zonal head, Sa’ad, maintained that voluntary surrender does not absolve one of criminal liability.
“While his decision to turn himself in is unusual, it does not absolve him of legal responsibility,” a senior official familiar with the case said. “Thorough investigations are ongoing.”
The anti-graft agency has also called on members of the public who may have been defrauded by Adamu to come forward with relevant information to aid the probe and facilitate restitution where possible.
As of press time, Adamu remains in EFCC custody, assisting with investigations. Charges are expected to be filed once preliminary findings are concluded.
