Akwa Ibom State Governor, Umo Eno, has disclosed that none of his political aides earns less than ₦1 million monthly, a revelation that has sparked mixed reactions across the state.
Eno, who made the declaration during a public address in Uyo on Friday, said the policy was part of his administration’s commitment to motivate appointees and ensure effective service delivery.
“None of my political aides earns less than ₦1 million monthly,” the governor stated, insisting that fair remuneration was necessary to meet the high cost of living and the demands of governance.
The announcement comes at a time when debates over public sector wages dominate national discourse, with workers in several states agitating for wage reviews amid rising inflation and economic strain.
While some residents commended the governor for “valuing public service,” others expressed concern over the sustainability of such pay packages, questioning whether the state’s finances could carry the burden.
Akwa Ibom, one of Nigeria’s oil-rich states, recently received part of the ₦660.349 billion shared among states by the Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC) in July 2025.
However, critics argue that oil wealth should be channeled into infrastructure, education, and healthcare rather than “bloated political salaries.”
Eno, who assumed office in 2023, has built a reputation for investing in infrastructure and social services.
But his latest disclosure has prompted calls for transparency on the exact number of aides on the state’s payroll and the total cost of maintaining them.
The governor, however, maintained that his government would continue to balance welfare with fiscal responsibility.
