Enugu Man Arrested With Fake N362,000 During Festival Season

In a recent operation, the Enugu State Police Command apprehended Chukwuebuka Igwebuike, a 37-year-old man, for allegedly possessing counterfeit 362,000 naira notes. 
The arrest, made on December 19, 2023, at Afor Market, Garki Awkunanaw, Enugu, was executed by vigilant police operatives acting on a tip-off.
According to a statement from DSP Daniel Nduker, the command’s spokesman, preliminary investigations revealed that Igwebuike confessed to the crime.
The suspect reportedly admitted to utilizing the fake one thousand naira notes to purchase low-cost items and receive change in genuine smaller denominations.
“He shall be arraigned in court and prosecuted accordingly once ongoing investigations are concluded,” stated DSP Daniel Nduker.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Kanayo Uzuegbu, has urged citizens to exercise caution during the festive season, especially when dealing with various denominations of mint Nigerian Naira.
In light of this incident, CP Uzuegbu emphasized the importance of public vigilance, encouraging citizens to promptly report anyone in possession of or transacting in counterfeit Nigerian Naira notes to the nearest police station.
The commissioner’s warning comes as a precautionary measure to safeguard the public from falling victim to fraudulent activities, particularly during the yuletide season.
This arrest sheds light on the potential increase in criminal activities involving counterfeit currency during the festive period.
 Law enforcement agencies in Enugu are taking proactive measures to curb such illegal practices and protect the financial interests of the citizens.
As the case unfolds, residents are urged to remain vigilant and cooperate with the police to ensure a secure and fraud-free environment during the holiday season.
