EPL: Great professional, players respect him – Ferdinand surprised over Man Utd’s decision to sell forward

Manchester United legend, Rio Ferdinand, has said he was surprised by the club’s decision to sell forward Danny Welbeck back in 2014.

According to Ferdinand, the 33-year-old is a great professional and players respects him.

The former England defender spoke as Welbeck helped Brighton to beat Man United 2-1 in the Premier League on Saturday.

Recall that Welbeck joined Man United’s academy at the age of eight.

He went on to make more than 100 appearances for his boyhood club, winning the Premier League under former manager Sir Alex Ferguson.

Welbeck was surprisingly sold to Arsenal in 2014 and has spent the last five seasons at Brighton.

“Nothing surprises me with Danny Welbeck,” Ferdinand said on TNT Sports.

“I watched him as a young kid at Manchester United and he was a wonderful player.

“I couldn’t believe it when United agreed to let him go because I thought he had so much value, not only as a player but just around the place as well as a former academy player.

“I think he is someone who players who have played against him respect more than some fans who don’t quite realise how difficult he is to play against. He is a great professional too.”
