The Premier League champions needed all three points to go above leaders Liverpool for at least 24 hours.
Erling Haaland ended his mini-drought with a brave finish in the opening five minutes.
And although Haaland had more chances to add to that strike, City had to hold on for the victory.
The result takes Pep Guardiola’s men up to 23 points, two more than Liverpool who are away to third-placed Arsenal on Super Sunday.
