Newly appointed Super Eagles head coach, Eric Chelle, has pledged to work tirelessly to ensure Nigeria’s qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Chelle, a former Mali international, made the commitment during his unveiling ceremony at the media conference room of the Moshood Abiola Stadium, Abuja, on Monday.
The 47-year-old coach signed a two-year contract with an option for an additional year.
Speaking at the event, Chelle expressed gratitude for the opportunity to lead the Nigerian national team, describing it as a significant milestone in his coaching career.
“I want to thank my agent, the NFF, the NSC, and indeed all Nigerians for this big opportunity,” Chelle said.
“Coaching the Super Eagles of Nigeria is an amazing job; I do not take this appointment for granted. I am elated and will do my utmost best.”
The new coach emphasized his preference for attacking football, noting that scoring goals would be a central focus of his strategy.
He assured Nigerians that he understands the weight of their expectations and is determined to deliver results.
“Football is about scoring goals, so I favor an attacking style. I know the expectations of Nigerians, and I will settle down and work diligently with my assistants towards the goal of qualifying the Super Eagles for the 2026 FIFA World Cup,” Chelle stated.
The Super Eagles have faced a challenging start to their qualification campaign, recording three draws and one loss in Group C.
They are currently winless and need significant improvements to secure a World Cup ticket. The team will next face Rwanda and Zimbabwe when the qualifiers resume in March.
Chelle’s appointment comes at a critical time as Nigeria seeks to revive its footballing fortunes and restore its status as a dominant force in African football.
