Former Minister of Communications, Major General Tajudeen Olanrewaju (Rtd), has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Nigeria’s Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Taoreed Abiodun Lagbaja.
The former Army chief died on Tuesday, November 5, 2024, in Lagos, a loss that has prompted tributes from military officials and government figures alike.
In a heartfelt message, General Olanrewaju, who once served as General Officer Commanding (GOC) 3 Division Nigerian Army and as Deputy Defence Adviser in Moscow, extended his condolences to the Nigerian Armed Forces, especially the Nigerian Army.
He described the news of Lagbaja’s death as “a rude shock” and a profound loss for the nation.
UniAbuja Elevates 154 staff In Major Promotion Exercise The University of Abuja has announced the promotion of 154 members of staff to various ranks, a milestone approved by the institution’s Governing Council during its 98th Regular Meeting held on December 10, 11, 12, and 14. Among the academic staff, 19 lecturers were elevated to the rank of professor, 14 to associate professor, 20 to senior lecturer, six to lecturer I, and one to lecturer II. Similarly, 94 non-teaching staff were promoted, including two to the rank of deputy director, six to assistant director, and others to different grades across various departments. A breakdown of the promotions highlights advancements in diverse fields such as automobile engineering, energy engineering, library management, international economic law, political sociology, cardiology, medical microbiology, educational administration, and applied geophysics, among others. The acting Registrar, Islamiyat Abdulrahim, disclosed the details in a statement signed by the acting Director of Public Affairs, Habib Yakoob. In her congratulatory remarks, the acting Vice Chancellor, Prof. Aisha Maikudi, lauded the dedication and hard work of the promoted staff. She emphasized the university’s commitment to fostering a culture of excellence through timely recognition of merit and career advancement. “These promotions reflect the University of Abuja’s commitment to fostering excellence, recognising merit, and encouraging growth among its staff,” Maikudi said. “I congratulate all the promoted individuals and urge them to continue contributing to the University’s vision of academic and professional distinction.” She further assured that all outstanding promotion cases had been reviewed and resolved, while pending cases awaited external assessment reports. This, she noted, underscores the university’s dedication to fairness, transparency, and meritocracy. Reflecting on Lagbaja’s contributions, General Olanrewaju highlighted his dedication and valor on the battlefield. “Here is an infantry officer who showed gut where it mattered most in the battlefield, defending the fatherland,” he remarked.
“He succumbed to the cruel hand of death like any living mortal. He served his nation loyally and with a noble sense of patriotism in his line of duty. May his soul rest in peace, Amin.”
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu also acknowledged Lagbaja’s service, describing his passing as an “uneasy” loss.
Tinubu expressed that while the news of Lagbaja’s death has been difficult to bear, comfort is drawn from the fact that he lived a life of honor, courage, and commitment to the nation.
Lagbaja’s death leaves a significant void in the Nigerian Army, where he served with distinction as a soldier, officer, and ultimately as Chief of Army Staff.
His legacy, marked by patriotism and a fierce dedication to duty, remains a source of inspiration to the Armed Forces and Nigerians at large.
