Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission have arrested a former Executive Secretary of the National Health Insurance Scheme, Prof. Usman Yusuf, over allegations of financial misconduct involving N8.7 billion.
Sources within the anti-graft agency confirmed that Yusuf was taken into custody on Wednesday night following findings that he awarded contracts to family members and inflated the agency’s budget for Information and Communication Technology projects.
A credible source at the EFCC disclosed that the former NHIS boss allegedly increased the scheme’s ICT budget from N4.975 billion to N8.7 billion and approved payments exceeding his official limit.
“We have just arrested the former Executive Secretary of the NHIS, Prof. Usman Yusuf.
“From our investigations, we found that he awarded contracts to family members, including Lubekh Nigeria Limited, a company where his nephew, Khalifa Hassan Yusufu, is a director,” the source revealed.
The source further alleged that Yusuf used his position for personal enrichment by approving contracts without due process and awarding them to companies lacking competence..
The EFCC’s Head of Media and Publicity, Dele Oyewale, confirmed Yusuf’s arrest but declined to provide further details.
The former NHIS boss is expected to be arraigned in court on Thursday as investigations continue into the allegations.
