The former Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), Mele Kyari, on Wednesday, left the headquarters of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) after hours of questioning over alleged financial misconduct during his tenure.
Kyari, who arrived at the commission’s headquarters in Abuja around 2:15 pm, was grilled on suspicious transactions linked to four bank accounts already frozen by court order.
Speaking briefly to journalists after the interrogation, the ex-NNPCL boss declared:
“I have done my part; the EFCC must do theirs. When each of us does our duty—without fear or favour, with honour, respect, and commitment—Nigeria moves forward.”
The EFCC had earlier secured a temporary order from the Federal High Court, Abuja, freezing four Jaiz Bank accounts allegedly linked to Kyari.
The accounts, two of which bear his name and two belonging to a non-governmental organisation, Guwori Community Development Foundation Flood Relief, were reportedly used to warehouse suspicious inflows amounting to ₦661,464,601.50.
Justice Emeka Nwite, who granted the interim order in August, limited the freeze to 30 days instead of the 60 sought by the EFCC, but gave room for renewal if necessary. The judge is expected to receive an update on the matter on September 23.
In an affidavit filed before the court, an EFCC investigator, Amin Abdullahi, disclosed that the suspicious inflows came from the NNPCL and oil companies with dealings linked to the state-owned corporation.
He added that the accounts were allegedly managed by Kyari through family members acting as fronts.
The petition that triggered the probe was filed in April 2025 by a group, Guardians of Democracy and Rule of Law, accusing Kyari of conspiracy, abuse of office, and money laundering.
According to the EFCC, preliminary findings suggest that the funds may be proceeds of unlawful activities, raising concerns about misappropriation and breach of trust.
