Former Speaker of the Ogun State House of Assembly, Hon. Olakunle Oluomo, has called on political leaders and stakeholders in the state to allow power to shift to Ogun West Senatorial District in the spirit of fairness, equity and justice.
Oluomo made the appeal during the commissioning of a series of constituency projects in Ifo Local Government Area to mark his 62nd birthday anniversary.
Speaking in an interview with PLATFORM TIMES, the lawmaker, who represents Ifo State Constituency I since 2011, said it was time for the people of Ogun West to produce the next governor after decades of political dominance by other zones in the state.
“We should allow Ogun West to produce the next governor of this state in the name of equity and justice,” Oluomo said. “Egba, Ijebu and Remo have been in power for the last 50 years; I think it’s time for a change.”
The former Speaker appealed to political elders, opinion leaders, and influential stakeholders across the state to embrace rotational governance as a way to foster inclusiveness and unity.
“I want to call on the good people of Ogun State to allow power to change hands. I appeal to our elder statesmen and top-ranking politicians to let power rotate to Ogun West so that we will not be seen as antagonists,” he pleaded.
As part of activities marking his birthday, Oluomo commissioned several constituency projects spread across four communities in the boreholes are at Abata and Epoto in Ifo Local Government.
The projects began with the inauguration of a three-classroom block at Igbusi Community High School, where he reflected on his motivation for the initiative.
“I don’t believe in publicizing my achievements, but I was once a student,” he said. “This school has not seen government intervention in 20 years, but I had them in mind. I am grateful that I’m able to do this and pray to do more.”
The celebration also featured the commissioning of borehole water projects at Abata and Epoto communities, which, according to Oluomo, were designed to improve access to clean water for residents of the rural areas.
“The opening of the borehole water supply at Abata and Epoto communities was remarkable,” he said.
“The people in the rural communities are part of my success story. I am a politician, but I don’t play politics with everything. It’s time to start giving back to them.”
The former Speaker urged residents of the benefiting communities to take ownership of the facilities and maintain them diligently.
“The people should see these projects as their own responsibility. They should maintain them because they are now in their custody,” he advised.
The event was rounded off with the commissioning of 126 solar-powered street lights across Ifo Local Government, aimed at improving security and social life in the area.
Reflecting on life and service, Oluomo expressed gratitude to God for the opportunity to continue serving his people and impacting lives.
“I don’t know how long God wants me to last, but I know that I am moving towards my grave daily,” he said soberly. “I just want to continue serving humanity and marking each birthday with projects that add value to people’s lives.”
He further called on the people of Ifo and Ogun State at large to continue supporting the All Progressives Congress (APC), assuring that the party remains committed to development and good governance.
“Our party is already in power, and apart from mischievous people, everyone can see and testify to what our party has done through effective representation,” he said.
Oluomo concluded by pledging to sustain his grassroots empowerment and community development programmes through his political family, the Oluomo Solidarity Forum, which he said would continue to focus on rural development and youth empowerment.
