…NULGE Declares Indefinite Strike, Secretariat Under Lock
There was pandemonium on Tuesday at the Imeko-Afon Local Government Secretariat in Ogun State as eight councillors, led by the Leader of the House, Hon. Balogun Olajide, allegedly assaulted top council officials over the non-payment of sitting allowances.
PLATFORM TIMES gathered that the lawmakers stormed the secretariat in a coordinated protest, reportedly pouncing on four senior officers, including the Head of Local Government Administration (HOLGA), Alhaja Shekoni Adebimpe Sekinat, and the Director of Water and Environmental Sanitation, Engr. Taiwo Opeyemi.
Other victims of the alleged assault include another Director in the Water and Environmental Sanitation department, Mr. Akinbowale Opeoluwa, and two yet-to-be-identified staff members.
A 44-second video obtained by PLATFORM TIMES captured the HOLGA visibly shaken while narrating the incident to a police officer and a man believed to be the council chairman.
In the video, Shekoni said, “I can’t understand why they said they have to take it now, that they have to take the money now. They have not said that kind of thing to me before. And they said if the chairman hears their noise from upstairs, he would come down. They are ready to cause problems, eight of them.”
The situation turned violent, with the lawmakers reportedly smashing furniture in the HOLGA’s office and allegedly tearing Engr. Opeyemi’s clothes during the confrontation.
In reaction to the incident, the National Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE), Imeko-Afon branch, declared an indefinite strike.
Chairman of the union, Comrade Jumoke Asimolowo, condemned the attack and directed all workers to vacate the secretariat immediately and await further instructions.
“NULGE has ordered the staff to go home until further notice, and the LGA Secretariat has been under lock and key,” a source familiar with the development told PLATFORM TIMES.
The matter has reportedly been escalated to the Ogun State Local Government Service Commission, while both the victims and the accused councillors remained unreachable as of press time.
