The Bodija Area of Ibadan, Oyo State, witnessed a devastating explosion on Tuesday, leading to fears of at least 10 casualties and 15 hospitalizations. Governor Seyi Makinde disclosed on Tuesday, that the explosion was caused by explosive devices stored by illegal miners in one of the houses in Bodija.
Governor Makinde, who visited the scene Tuesday night, emphasized that preliminary investigations by security agencies implicated illegal miners. Despite ongoing investigations, the Governor assured that anyone found responsible for the tragic incident would be held accountable.
The blast not only claimed lives and left many injured but also caused significant damage to public and private properties.
The impact extended to the Governor’s Office, Secretariat, Oyo State House of Assembly, and several residential areas including the homes of prominent figures like former Deputy Governor Chief Iyiola Oladokun and the late Chief Bola Ige.
Oladokun, a key political figure in Oyo State, is currently displaced along with his family.
Their residence, badly affected by the explosion, has raised concerns about the building’s structural integrity.
Similarly, the late Chief Bola Ige’s house, located near the Oladokuns, suffered damage with shattered windows.
The State Government, led by Governor Makinde, has taken immediate steps to address the aftermath.
Governor Makinde assured that the government would cover the medical bills of the victims and support those whose houses were affected in rebuilding their lives.
Rescue operations are underway, with emergency services deployed to the scene.
As the community grapples with the consequences of this tragic incident, Governor Makinde urged residents to remain calm and avoid the immediate scene to facilitate seamless rescue operations.
He emphasized the commitment of the government to provide necessary assistance to the injured and affected families.
The Oyo State Police Command confirmed the explosion and ongoing rescue efforts on Tuesday night. Security service chiefs, paramilitary chiefs, and fire operatives have been mobilized to contain the spillover from the explosion, ensuring a comprehensive response to the crisis.
The Deputy Governor, Bayo Lawal, visited the scene late Tuesday night, reinforcing the government’s commitment to managing the situation and providing support to those affected.
The incident serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers associated with illegal activities and underscores the importance of stringent measures to prevent such tragedies in the future.
