The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a Chinese national, identified as Joe Gu, in connection with the recent improvised explosive device (IED) explosion that rocked a CCTV equipment shop on Kodesho Street, Ikeja, last week.
PLATFORM TIMES gathered that detectives from the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Yaba, apprehended the suspect at about 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 25, at his residence located at No. A11, Bila Vista, Banana Island, Ikoyi.
A top security source confirmed the arrest, saying it followed a discreet investigation that linked the Chinese businessman to the explosion incident.
“The complainant had raised strong suspicion that the suspect might be behind the explosion,” the source disclosed.
Further findings revealed that the suspect and the complainant had a bitter business fallout in 2013, after which the Chinese national allegedly threatened to sabotage the complainant’s business operations.
“Their business relationship ended on a sour note over a decade ago. Since then, there had been lingering hostility between them. The explosion incident reopened that suspicion,” another source said.
Although the police have not officially confirmed the details of the arrest, multiple sources within the command said that investigators are exploring both commercial rivalry and personal vendetta as possible motives behind the alleged act.
The suspect is currently being interrogated at the SCID, Yaba, while forensic experts are said to be analysing materials recovered from the explosion site to determine the type and source of the explosive device.
As of press time, no fatalities were recorded, but property worth millions of naira was reportedly damaged in the explosion that shook nearby shops.
