The Ogun State Council of the Radio, Television and Theatre Arts Workers Union (RATTAWU) has elected new executives, with Comrade Gbenga Fagbenro of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism (MCT) emerging as the new chairman.

Fagbenro secured a landslide victory over the incumbent, Comrade Idowu Rotimi, polling 40 votes against Rotimi’s 10 in the highly anticipated delegates’ election held in Abeokuta.

In his acceptance speech, Fagbenro expressed appreciation to members for their overwhelming support and pledged to run an inclusive administration. “I want to thank all members for trusting me with this mandate. I assure you, our administration will be one of inclusiveness, collaboration, and service,” he said.

Outgoing Chairman, Rotimi, commended members for standing by his administration throughout his tenure. He also lauded the state government for providing an enabling environment for union activities.

“I sincerely appreciate our members across the five chapters for their belief in our mission. I also thank the state government for its continued support,” Rotimi remarked.

The election, which was conducted peacefully, was supervised by the National Vice President (South-West), Comrade Dare Durosinmi, who hailed the decorum and maturity displayed by delegates.

Describing the election as “engaging and symbolic,” Durosinmi said, “The large turnout today shows that RATTAWU matters deeply to its members. They came out, made their choice, and chose a leader they believe in. I am confident they will be proud of their choice.”

Durosinmi, who declared his intention to run for the position of National President at the union’s upcoming national delegate conference in July, urged the new executives to be proactive and member-focused.

“I believe I have the experience and track record from the chapter, state, and zonal levels. I’ve been encouraged by colleagues to run, and I’m confident of victory. We will transform this union positively,” he said.

Also present at the event were former State Chairman, Comrade Adebowale Akinwunmi, and Comrade Seye Adeyemo, both of whom applauded the conduct of the election. They advised the new leadership to prioritise the welfare of members.

Chairman of the Ogun State Council of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Hammed Ademola Benco, who also attended the event, cautioned the new leadership against unnecessary confrontation in their agitations. He advised them to embrace dialogue as a tool for effective unionism.

Other elected members of the executive include:

Vice Chairman – Comrade Seun Bodunrin (NTA)

Secretary – Comrade Bisola Oludotun (OGBC)

Assistant Secretary – Comrade Gbemisola Adeniyi (NTA)

Treasurer – Comrade Kolawole Oso (OGTV)

Financial Secretary – Comrade Ayo Omotosho (Paramount FM)

Auditor – Comrade Jumoke Adeniregun (OGBC)

Publicity Secretary – Comrade Kunle Idowu (OGTV)

The election marks a new chapter for RATTAWU in Ogun State, with members expressing optimism about the union’s future under the new leadership.
