Recent claims suggesting that President Bola Tinubu has directed the reinstatement of former Lagos State House of Assembly Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, have been debunked as “fake news,” sources within the state government and legislature confirmed today.
Obasa, ousted from his position on January 13, 2025, following a vote by 37 Assembly members citing allegations of misconduct and financial impropriety, has not received any directive from the Presidency for reinstatement, according to a senior legislative aide speaking anonymously.
“This misinformation is a deliberate attempt to sow discord within the House.
There has been no instruction from the Presidency regarding Obasa’s reinstatement,” the aide clarified.
In his place, Rt. Hon. Mojisola Lasbat Meranda, the first female Speaker of the Assembly, assumed office amidst broad political support, as confirmed by a government official close to Speaker Meranda.
Endorsements from Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and key political figures underscore her legitimacy in office.
Analysts have viewed the circulation of false reports as a potential strategy by Obasa’s allies to influence reconsideration of his removal.
“This appears to be a desperate move to alter public opinion,” remarked a political analyst familiar with the situation.
Despite these developments, Speaker Meranda has maintained her legislative responsibilities with the support of the Assembly.
