Says South-West Must Return To Era Of Collective Development

The Leader of Afenifere, Chief Reuben Fasoranti, has charged governors in the South-West region to give priority to regional integration and development as a way of reviving the ideals of the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo and ensuring sustainable progress in the zone.
Fasoranti, who spoke on Wednesday through a statement issued by the pan-Yoruba socio-political group, urged the governors to rise above party differences and work collectively towards addressing the economic and social challenges facing the Yoruba nation.
He lamented that the South-West, once reputed for its visionary leadership and people-oriented policies, was now lagging behind due to disunity and lack of coordinated development strategies.
“Our forebears built this region on a foundation of cooperation, courage, and innovation. Today, we need the same unity of purpose to reposition the South-West as a model of good governance and regional growth,” Fasoranti said.
He emphasised that the governors must take practical steps to strengthen inter-state cooperation in education, agriculture, infrastructure, and security through the Development Agenda for Western Nigeria (DAWN) Commission.
“The DAWN Commission must not just exist in name. The governors must empower it to drive tangible projects that will benefit all Yoruba states,” he added.
The elder statesman also called for investment in human capital development and youth empowerment to curb unemployment and social unrest.
“The future of our region depends on how well we prepare our youth today. The government must create opportunities that will make them productive citizens and discourage migration or crime,” Fasoranti warned.
He commended President Bola Tinubu’s ongoing reforms but urged the South-West to take a leading role in redefining Nigeria’s development path through strategic collaboration and innovation.
“As beneficiaries of Awolowo’s political legacy, we cannot afford to fail. The South-West must, once again, lead Nigeria by example,” he concluded.
