The father of the prime suspect in the gruesome killing of a woman and her six children in Kano has called on authorities to execute his son without delay, declaring that he deserves no mercy for what he described as an unforgivable crime.
Malam Auwal, speaking in an emotional interview on Freedom Radio on Monday, disowned his son, Umar Auwal, who is currently in police custody over the brutal murder of his aunt, Fatima Abubakar, 35, and her children in Dorayi Chiranchi area of the Kano metropolis.
The victims were identified as Maimuna, 17; Aisha, 16; Bashir, 13; Abubakar, 10; Faruk, seven; and Abdussalam, aged one and a half.
Police authorities confirmed that Umar confessed to the killings, which reportedly occurred in broad daylight on Saturday, sending shockwaves across Kano and beyond.
He is also said to have admitted involvement in a separate attack in Tudun Yola, where two housewives were murdered and their house set ablaze.
Speaking with deep anguish, Malam Auwal described his son as “useless to society” and insisted that he should not be spared.
“What he committed against my younger sister and her six innocent children is beyond condemnation. I distance myself from him completely,” he said.
“I don’t even want them to waste time prosecuting him. Umar and people like him should be eliminated. They should not be kept alive and fed with taxpayers’ money.”
The distraught father further alleged that Umar had previously killed another younger sister years ago and mutilated her body by plucking out her eyes — a claim that has not yet been independently verified by authorities.
Commending the police for what he described as swift and professional handling of the case, Auwal said he had already “sacrificed” his son and vowed that neither he nor his wife, Umar’s mother, would attend court proceedings during the trial.
“I have handed him over to God and the law. Whatever punishment is given to him is justified,” he added.
Fatima Abubakar and her children were reportedly attacked in their home at Dorayi Gidan Kwari, allegedly by assailants led by Umar, in one of the most horrific domestic crimes recorded in the state in recent years.
The incident has sparked widespread outrage, grief and renewed calls for tougher action against violent crime in Kano and across the country.
The Kano State Police Command has said investigations are ongoing and that the suspect will be charged to court upon conclusion of inquiries.
