Former Ekiti State Governor Ayodele Fayose has criticised a planned #EndBadGovernance protest targeting President Bola Tinubu’s administration, declaring that the rally’s organisers have ulterior motives.
Fayose expressed these concerns during a television interview on Monday, where he argued that the protest, set for August, had a political undertone.
Fayose pointed out that during the eight-year tenure of Tinubu’s predecessor, Muhammadu Buhari, there was no similar protest specifically addressing hunger, despite widespread economic challenges.
Buhari, a former military head of state from Katsina State in North-West Nigeria, served as Nigeria’s democratically elected President from May 2015 until May 2023, when he handed over to Tinubu, a former Lagos governor from the South-West geopolitical zone.
“Hunger didn’t start one day. This hunger started a long time ago. That was why they had a rally at a time and said: ‘Jonathan must go’. (President Goodluck) Jonathan left.
That hunger did not stop. Buhari came. I spoke to power. Buhari spent eight years, nobody said anything. I didn’t remember any rally,” Fayose stated, referencing past administrations.
Fayose emphasised that no government is perfect, suggesting that Nigeria’s current economic challenges are a continuation of long-standing issues.
“Nigeria is a very difficult country to govern. We all know that. If a man is to spend four years, give him a mid-term,” he added, calling for patience and caution in assessing Tinubu’s administration.
The former governor argued that the situation does not warrant efforts to destabilize the government.
“The little they cannot be sufficient right now for anybody to say we must bring down the government. Because there must be a motive,” Fayose concluded.
