The American Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Legal Attache in Nigeria, Mr. Jack Smith, praised the appointment of Mr. Ola Olukoyede as the Executive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
During a visit to the EFCC’s headquarters on Wednesday, Smith commended Olukoyede’s impressive credentials and expressed delight in the Commission’s reform agenda.
Smith, in his statement, acknowledged conducting personal research on Olukoyede’s background and qualifications, affirming that the appointment was well-founded.
“I came to congratulate you on your appointment. I did my homework and research, and I discovered that your appointment is right,” he stated.
Highlighting his satisfaction with the EFCC’s direction under Olukoyede’s leadership, Smith emphasized the positive impact of the reform agenda on advancing the Commission’s anti-corruption mandate.
“I welcome the direction you are taking the Commission; the rebranding and other positive initiatives are good,” he said.
In response, Olukoyede expressed appreciation for the commendation and underscored the longstanding relationship between the FBI and Nigeria, predating the establishment of the EFCC.
He clarified that his reform agenda aimed at more effective ways of achieving the Commission’s mandate, emphasizing the importance of defining the focus of anti-corruption efforts.
While pledging commitment to the existing partnership with the FBI, Olukoyede stressed the EFCC’s dedication to obtaining results through ethical means.
“Yes, we will get results, but we are concerned about how results are obtained,” he emphasized.
During the visit, Olukoyede briefed the FBI team on the Commission’s upcoming programs, with a particular focus on a pending public engagement addressing youth involvement in cybercrimes.
He expressed the EFCC’s commitment to guiding the nation’s youth in the right direction and addressing factors beyond their control through collaboration with stakeholders.
Smith was accompanied on the visit by Jim Oscar and Ayotunde Solademi, highlighting the collaborative efforts between the FBI and EFCC in combating financial crimes.
