The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has taken decisive action against MultiChoice Nigeria following the company’s announcement of significant subscription rate hikes for its DStv and GOtv services.
In a statement released on Tuesday, Ondaje Ijagwu, FCCPC’s Director of Corporate Affairs, revealed that MultiChoice has been summoned to provide clarity on the impending price adjustments.
Effective from March 1, 2025, DStv Premium subscribers will face an increase from N37,000 to N44,500, while Compact+ subscribers will see rates rise from N25,000 to N30,000, according to an email communication reviewed by TheCable on Monday.
The FCCPC invoked its authority under Sections 32 and 33 of the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Act (FCCPA), citing concerns over unilateral price hikes, potential market dominance abuses, and perceived anti-competitive practices within the pay-TV industry.
“The FCCPC is deeply concerned about the frequency of price increases faced by Nigerian consumers, particularly amidst allegations that MultiChoice employs disparate pricing strategies across different markets,” stated Ijagwu in the release.
Failure by MultiChoice to satisfactorily explain these adjustments or any violations of fair market practices could lead to regulatory penalties, sanctions, or corrective measures aimed at safeguarding consumer interests, Ijagwu warned.
Furthermore, the FCCPC is collaborating with sector regulators and relevant agencies to ensure equitable competition and consumer protection across Nigeria’s broadcasting and digital subscription sectors.
