The Federal College of Education (FCE), Osiele, Abeokuta, will confer fellowship awards on legendary juju musician and evangelist, Ebenezer Obey-Fabiyi, and other eminent Nigerians as it marks its 50th anniversary alongside its 26th combined convocation, where 2,361 students will graduate.
The Provost, Dr Rafiu Soyele, disclosed this on Friday during a press briefing, saying the honours are meant to recognise outstanding contributions to education, culture, governance and national development in line with the institution’s teacher-training mandate.
Among the awardees are Rt. Hon. Aminu Bello Masari, former Katsina State governor and Chairman, Board of Trustees of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund); former Kano State governor Alhaji Umar Ganduje; Ogun State Speaker Hon. Oludaisi Elemide; Engr. Yemisi Sina; Dr Ronke Soyombo; and SAN Anthonia Akinlawon, among others.
Dr Soyele said Obey’s selection was partly informed by his commitment to cultural preservation and education, recalling his 2019 donation of archival materials that led to the establishment of the Ebenezer Obey Museum/Gallery on campus.
“Honouring these individuals reaffirms our commitment to excellence and collaboration in advancing education in Nigeria,” the provost said, adding that Masari’s leadership at TETFund has been pivotal to infrastructure and academic development in tertiary institutions.
He announced that 1,330 students will graduate from the 2022/2023 session, while 1,031 completed their programmes in the 2023/2024 session.
Adeleke Opayemi emerged as the Best Graduating Student for the 2022/2023 session, while Ariyo Ayomide clinched the top honour for 2023/2024.
“This convocation and our Golden Jubilee reflect the impact of thousands of teachers trained here who are serving across classrooms nationwide,” Soyele said.
He added that the anniversary celebrations, scheduled for February 11, 2026, at the COEASU Hall, are designed to deepen partnerships and attract support for infrastructure, research and student development.
Other activities lined up include cultural nights, alumni reunions, awards presentations and a novelty football match between alumni and staff on February 6, 2026, at the school sports complex.
Established in 1976 and attaining federal status in the mid-1980s, FCE Abeokuta has grown into a leading teacher-training institution, playing a critical role in Nigeria’s education system over the past five decades.
